Balsan-dong Church has a rich history. September 3 1978 marks an important date. It was separated from Hwagok-dong Church. Father Kim Jeong-hong became the first pastor. In the 1970s apartment complexes arose. The population increased in the Balsan-dong area. Hwagok-dong Church planned to divide the parish. This led to the purchase of land for a new church. Construction began. Balsan-dong Church was established during this construction.
Before the church building was complete masses were held in the basement. The first mass was held under these conditions. July 12 1979 saw the completion of the new church building.
Balsan-dong Church also has international connections. In 1866 Saint O’Maître was martyred. He was born in France. The Algu নেট diocese in France has a special connection to the church. 31 members of the diocese visited Balsan-dong Church. They attended a mass commemorating the 131st anniversary of Saint O’Maître’s martyrdom. This visit led to a sisterhood relationship with the Algu নেট diocese. Balsan-dong Church was the first in the Seoul Archdiocese. It established such a relationship with a foreign church.
