Eight hundred thousand members. That’s the staggering number associated with Yoido Full Gospel Church. Can you imagine? This wasn’t always the case. This magnificent structure this testament to faith stands as a symbol of remarkable growth.
Yoido Full Gospel Church is more than just a church. It’s a historical landmark. It’s a cultural icon in Seoul. It’s a place where faith blossomed from humble beginnings. It’s a story of unwavering belief perseverance and astonishing expansion.
Our story begins in 1958. Pastor David Yonggi Cho and his mother-in-law Choi Ja-shil founded the church. Their first service was held in Choi Ja-shil’s home. Only five people attended. This tiny seed however held immense potential. They embarked on a mission of door-to-door evangelism offering spiritual and practical help. The church swiftly outgrew the home then a backyard tent.
The church’s growth accelerated dramatically when Pastor Cho introduced the concept of the Three-Fold Blessing. He preached that physical health financial prosperity and spiritual salvation were all part of God’s plan. This message resonated deeply attracting many to the church. Membership soared to a thousand by 1961.
They moved to Seodaemun building a new auditorium the Full Gospel Revival Center. But even that space proved insufficient. By the early 1970s they needed a much larger venue. They chose Yeouido Island. It was then largely undeveloped sand dunes. Yet Pastor Cho believed this was God’s chosen location.
Despite economic hardships including the 1973 oil crisis construction continued. The new auditorium opened in 1973 with a capacity of 12000. The church was renamed Full Gospel Central Church.
Growth remained explosive. By 1977 membership reached fifty thousand doubling in just two years. The church expanded to accommodate its massive congregation establishing satellite churches throughout Seoul. By 1993 with 700000 members Yoido Full Gospel Church held the Guinness World Record for the largest single church congregation.
The church faced controversies. In 2014 Pastor Cho and his son were convicted of embezzlement although the case was later dismissed. More recently controversies arose around the senior pastor’s support for a controversial figure. But the church continues to thrive. In 2024 Yoido Full Gospel Church made headlines by appointing its first six female elders a significant step towards greater inclusivity.
Today Yoido Full Gospel Church remains a powerful force. Its extraordinary growth is a powerful reminder of the enduring strength of faith. It’s a testament to the power of belief and the resilience of the human spirit. This is not simply a place of worship. It is a living breathing story of faith. A story that continues to unfold.
