High up on Bukhansan Mountain sits Munsusa Temple. It stands as a testament to Seoul’s rich Buddhist history. Munsusa is not just a temple. It is a sanctuary where nature and spirituality intertwine.
Imagine yourself transported back to the Goryeo Dynasty. Prominent figures sought solace here. Monks meditated. Poets found inspiration amidst its serene beauty.
Munsusa is known as a prayer site that overlooks Obong. Even today, its sacredness remains undiminished. The temple is nestled below Munsubong Peak. Its surroundings are picturesque.
Look closely at the temple’s layout. To the east, you will see Bohyeonbong Peak. To the west, Bibong Peak guards the temple. Gaze south for a view of Gwanaksan Mountain. The panoramic view extends west to the Han River. You can see as far as the Incheon sea.
During the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties, poets frequented this place. They composed verses inspired by the scenery. Yi Jang-yong and Choe Rip were among them. Most famously, the temple was home to the great Taeyeon. Taeyeon left an inspiring poem about Munsusa.
Listen to his words echoing through the ages.
“A single room barely shelters us.
How much more could we ask for?
I wish all people could disappear.
The path is rocky.
Cuckoos cry in the valley.
The moon hangs on the mountain peak.
Wind whispers through trees.
Who will follow my humble path?”
Munsusa also houses a natural cave known as Munsugul. It is said that the temple’s founder, Taeyeon Guksa, named it Munsugul. Legend says the temple earned its name here.
Interestingly, Syngman Rhee also visited Munsusa. The former president wrote the Munsusa signboard himself. A photograph of this event remains at the temple.
Munsusa houses the Seokgayeorae triad and the Munsubo-sal statue. These statues are enshrined in the Daewoongjeon Hall. Myongseonghwanghu enshrined the Munsubo-sal statue. Ibangja Yeosa, mother of Prince Yeongchinwang, enshrined the Seokgayeorae triad.
As you stand here at Munsusa, consider its legacy. Munsusa is a place where history, art, and nature converge. Let the temple’s serenity fill you. Let the whispers of the past guide you.
