The Archbishop of Seoul, Cardinal Kim Sou-hwan, officially established Madu-dong Catholic Church as a parish. It was a momentous occasion, marking the birth of a new spiritual home for the local community. The church’s construction began swiftly. The chosen site was in Madu-dong, a historic neighborhood known for its rich cultural heritage. The church grounds encompassed an expansive area, spanning over 2,175 square meters. The church building itself was designed to accommodate a large congregation, with a seating capacity of over 6,383 people. On October 6th, 2001, just one day after its establishment, Madu-dong Catholic Church acquired land for its future expansion. The property, located at 603-204 and 607-204 Baekbeom-ro, provided ample space for additional facilities and amenities. As the church began to take shape, so too did its community. On October 9th, 2001, Father Joseph Chung was appointed as the first pastor of Madu-dong Catholic Church. His arrival brought a renewed sense of purpose and direction. He guided the growing congregation. He nurtured their faith and fostered a sense of belonging. On October 13th, 2001, representatives from various neighborhood communities gathered at the church. They discussed ways to strengthen their bonds and support the church’s mission. The church quickly became a central hub for community events, a place where people could come together to celebrate their faith. And to connect with one another. Madu-dong Catholic Church continued to grow and evolve in the years that followed. The church underwent extensive renovations and expansions. It ensured it could serve the ever-increasing needs of its parishioners. Today, Madu-dong Catholic Church stands as a beacon of faith and hope in the heart of Seoul.
