“South Korea’s most iconic statue” some say. The Statue of King Sejong stands here in Gwanghwamun Plaza. It honors a man who shaped Korean history. He was the fourth king of the Joseon dynasty. Sejong the Great reigned from 1418 to 1450.
King Sejong wasn’t just a ruler. He was a visionary. He oversaw great advances in science and technology. He expanded Joseon’s territory. Most importantly, he created Hangeul. This is the Korean alphabet.
Look closely at the statue. It’s more than just a monument. It represents a cultural revolution. Before Hangeul, Koreans used Chinese characters. This made literacy difficult for common people. King Sejong wanted to change that. He wanted to empower his people with the ability to read and write.
The Statue of King Sejong was unveiled on October 9, 2009. This was on Hangul Day. The day celebrates the 563rd anniversary of Hangeul’s invention. President Lee Myung-bak attended the ceremony.
The golden statue is impressive. It stands 6.2 meters high. Other sources say 9.5 meters or 6.7 meters. No matter the exact height, it’s a sight to behold. It weighs 20 tons. The king holds a book in one hand. The other is raised. The sides of the statue display all the Hangul characters.
Notice the objects in front of the statue. These are models of a celestial globe, a rain gauge, and a sundial. South Koreans credit King Sejong with inventing these. He promoted agriculture, literature, and Confucian philosophy.
King Sejong’s likeness appears on the 10,000 won bill. This shows his importance in Korean society.
The Statue of King Sejong sits 250 meters from the statue of Admiral Yi Sun-sin. Admiral Yi was a naval commander. He defended Korea against the Japanese invasion. Both statues stand proudly in Gwanghwamun Plaza.
Near the statue, you can find “Sejong’s Story.” It is a small museum dedicated to King Sejong. Inside, you can learn more about his life and achievements.
The statue was designed by Kim Yeong-won. He is a professor at Hongik University. The statue is designed to be sitting.
King Sejong’s legacy lives on. He is remembered as one of Korea’s greatest leaders. His statue serves as a reminder of his contributions. It inspires Koreans to embrace their language and culture. Take a moment to appreciate the vision of King Sejong.
