Did you know Chungdong First Methodist Church is the oldest surviving church in Korea? It stands proudly before you a testament to faith and history. This isn’t just any church. This is the mother church of Methodism in Korea. Founded on October 11 1885 by American missionary Henry Appenzeller it played a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s religious landscape.

Initially housed in a humble hanok a traditional Korean home the congregation quickly outgrew its space. The current building Bethel Chapel was completed on December 26 1897. It’s a stunning example of simplified American Gothic architecture complete with arched windows. Imagine the dedication ceremony the joyful sounds of hymns echoing through the newly built chapel. A dedication service was held for the new building which was also dubbed Bethel Chapel.

But Chungdong First Methodist Church’s significance extends far beyond its architecture. Within these walls Korea saw its first Methodist baptism in 1887. It also hosted the first Christian women’s group in 1889. It housed the first pipe organ a remarkable instrument in that era. The church even built Korea’s first Western-style chapel. It was a hub for innovation.

Beyond the religious sphere Chungdong First Methodist Church served as a publishing powerhouse. It housed the Trilingual Press. This press was responsible for the first private newspaper in Korea the Tongnip sinmun. The Korean Christian Advocate the first Christian newspaper and the Korean Repository the first English-language monthly magazine were all published here. The church even acquired Korea’s first privately-owned printing press a testament to its progressive nature.

The church expanded in 1926 transforming from a cruciform or cross-shaped building into the rectangular structure you see today. The building was declared Historic Site of South Korea No. 277 in 1977 a well-deserved recognition.

Today Chungdong First Methodist Church continues to thrive. It holds services in Korean and English. A museum opened in 2023 showcases its fascinating history. As you stand here feel the weight of history. Feel the echoes of prayers and publications. This isn’t just a building. It’s a living legacy. A testament to the enduring power of faith community and innovation in Korea’s vibrant history.
