Imagine a temple nestled in the heart of Seoul, a place where history and spirituality intertwine. That place is Doseonsa Temple. This Buddhist temple of the Jogye Order is not just any temple. It is the largest temple complex on Bukhansan. Bukhansan is the most prominent mountain north of Seoul.
Doseonsa Temple is named after its supposed founder Doseon. He was a renowned Buddhist priest. Legend says that Doseon traveled through these mountains over 1100 years ago. During the Silla Kingdom, he made a prophecy that led to the temple’s construction. The temple was officially dedicated in 862. However none of its original structures have survived.
According to legend, Doseon used only his walking stick. He carved the large Bodhisattva statue that still sits at the temple. Interestingly the statue shows no chisel marks. This adds to the mystery of how it was made.
During the Joseon dynasty, in the 7th year of King Gwangmu’s reign, Doseonsa Temple was honored. It became the representative temple of Korea. Its purpose was to promote Cheongdamdaejongsa’s Korean Buddhism movement. This movement aimed at a religious revival. Due to these special circumstances, Doseonsa Temple gained a high reputation. This recognition has remained strong to this day.
Inside Doseonsa Temple, visitors can explore the Cheongdamdaejongsa Memorial Hall. Here they can view the remains and written works of Cheongdamdaejongsa. Near Cheonbuljeon Hall, there is a pond where you can toss a coin and make a wish. Past Yongammun Gate, you can find a hiking path. This path connects to Baegundae Cliff and Insubong Peak.
The Ksitigarbha Hall holds portraits of President Park Chung-hee, Yuk Yeong-su, and Hyundai Chairman Chung Ju-yung. In front of the hall stands a tree said to be 200 years old. A Buddhist priest brought it from India. Historical artifacts can be found throughout Doseonsa Temple.
While exploring Doseonsa, take a moment to appreciate the large stone statue. It is 218 cm tall. It is presumed to be from the Silla period. Near the temple’s west side, there is a unique site. It is known as Dotongbawi. Doseon is said to have meditated here.
