Kwan Nam, a name synonymous with Korean modern art, left an indelible mark on the art world. Born in 1911, Kwan Nam’s journey began in the quiet countryside of Gyeongsangbuk-do. At the age of fourteen, he embarked on a transformative journey to Japan. There, he honed his skills at the Pacific Art School in Tokyo, graduating in 1935. After Korea’s independence, Kwan Nam returned to his homeland. He settled in Seoul. In this vibrant city, he co-founded the Chosun Art and Culture Association in 1947. This association played a crucial role in shaping the Korean art scene. Kwan Nam’s first solo exhibition in Korea took place in 1949. He quickly gained recognition. He became a respected figure in Western-style painting. The early 1950s saw Kwan Nam return to Japan. The Tokyo Biennale and the Salon de Mai in Tokyo profoundly impacted his artistic vision. This led him to Paris in 1954. He enrolled in l’Académie de la Grande Chaumière, where he delved into abstract art. Kwan Nam’s talent earned him international acclaim. In 1958, he became the first Korean artist invited to the prestigious Salon de Mai. He exhibited alongside renowned artists like H. Hartung and A. Manessier at the Fleuve Gallery.
