“Thirty years,” Pastor Kim mused, gazing at the Gyeongdong Presbyterian Church. “A lifetime, really.” It was June 25th, 2016. The Gyeongdong Presbyterian Church was celebrating its 30th anniversary. A wave of warmth washed over him as he recalled the church’s humble beginnings in 1986. Back then, nestled in a small building in Jung-gu, Seoul, it served as a beacon of hope for a small group of believers. The church was officially established on June 15th, 1986 in a modest 64-pyeong building. It was initially known as the 89th branch of the Presbyterian Church of Korea, under the guidance of Pastor Kim Jung-hoon. The congregation grew quickly. They relocated to a larger space in Sanggye-dong in October 1987. By March 1988, Kim Jung-hoon had become the senior pastor of the newly christened Gyeongdong Presbyterian Church. The church continued to flourish under his leadership. An annex was added in September 1989, doubling the worship space. Over the years, Gyeongdong Presbyterian Church became a spiritual home for many. It hosted numerous baptisms, weddings, and retreats. It served as a place of solace and fellowship for its members. The church even extended its reach internationally, with members visiting conferences in Nagoya, Japan, and holding connections with Revelation Church in London. By its 30th anniversary, Gyeongdong Presbyterian Church had welcomed 162 members into its fold. The ceremony today was a testament to their shared faith and resilience. From its humble beginnings, Gyeongdong Presbyterian Church had become a vibrant community of faith, touching the lives of many. The building itself, having undergone several expansions and renovations, stood as a physical representation of their spiritual growth. “It’s more than just bricks and mortar,” Pastor Kim thought, a smile touching his lips. “It’s a testament to God’s unwavering love and the enduring power of faith.”
