“South Korea’s most iconic statue,” they call it. That’s quite a claim for the Statue of King Sejong. But as you stand here in Gwanghwamun Plaza, you might just agree. This isn’t just a sculpture. It’s a tribute to a visionary leader. King Sejong the Great, the fourth king of the Joseon dynasty, is immortalized here. He is one of Korea’s most famous historical figures.
The Statue of King Sejong was unveiled on October 9, 2009. The dedication happened during a Hangul Day celebration. This day marked the 563rd anniversary of the invention of the Korean alphabet. President Lee Myung-bak and other government officials attended the ceremony.
Kim Yeong-won, a professor at Hongik University, designed the statue. Early plans considered moving an existing statue from Deoksugung Palace. Instead, they commissioned a new design. The new statue depicts King Sejong seated. This contrasts with the nearby standing statue of Admiral Yi Sun-sin. The King Sejong statue stands about 250 meters from the Admiral Yi Sun-sin statue.
The golden statue is impressive. It stands 6.2 meters tall and weighs 20 tons. Another source claims it is 9.5 meters high. Still another claims 6.7 meters. Regardless, it’s a substantial monument. The king holds a book in one hand and raises the other. The Hangul alphabet characters are displayed on the statue’s sides.

In front of the statue, you’ll see small models. These represent a celestial globe, a rain gauge, and a sundial. South Koreans attribute their invention to King Sejong.
Near the Statue of King Sejong, you can find “Sejong’s Story.” It’s a small museum dedicated to the king. It is an exhibition hall showcasing his life and achievements.
The creation of the Gwanghwamun Plaza provided a new public space in Downtown Seoul. The statue of King Sejong became a central part of this space.
