Amidst the energetic rhythm of Seoul, discover the compelling story of Manmin Central Church. This church, established in 1982 by Jaerock Lee, pulsates with a vibrant history. Manmin, meaning “all creation, all nations, all people,” reflects its ambitious outreach.

Manmin Central Church stands as one of Korea’s largest churches, boasting a global membership exceeding 120,000. Its influence extends through various media, including the Manmin News Paper, Manmin Magazine, and the GCN television broadcasting station. The church has been a prominent player in Korean Christian activities, participating in events like those surrounding the 50th anniversary of the division of Korea and the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Their “Nissi” orchestra has graced significant occasions, from National Breakfast Prayer Meetings to goodwill concerts.

The church’s journey hasn’t been without its trials. In 1999, a documentary aired by Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) sparked controversy. The ensuing protests by Manmin Church members, which involved disruptions at the TV station, led to legal battles and jail sentences for some involved. Further controversy arose in 1999 when the church was expelled from the Christian Council of Korea due to a claim of sinlessness and exemption from death made by Jaerock Lee. More recently, in 2018, Lee was sentenced to prison for sexual assault. Despite these challenges, Manmin Central Church has persevered. After Lee’s death in 2023, his third daughter, Pastor Lee Soo-jin, took the helm, followed by the passing of his widow, Lee Bok-nim, in 2025.

Manmin Central Church continues its mission, sending missionaries across the globe and fostering a community of faith. Its story, marked by both growth and controversy, offers a glimpse into the evolving landscape of Christianity in South Korea. The church’s enduring presence in Seoul stands as a testament to its resilience. Its reach extends globally, with branches and missionaries spanning continents, from the United States and Japan to South America and Africa. Manmin Central Church’s story is an integral part of Seoul’s spiritual tapestry. Come visit and experience its atmosphere firsthand.
