The church’s journey hasn’t been without its trials. In 1999, a documentary aired by Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) sparked controversy. Further controversy arose in 1999 when the church was expelled from the Christian Council of Korea due to a claim of sinlessness and exemption from death made by Jaerock Lee. More recently, in 2018, Lee was sentenced to prison for sexual assault. Despite these challenges, Manmin Central Church has persevered. After Lee’s death in 2023, his third daughter, Pastor Lee Soo-jin, took the helm, followed by the passing of his widow, Lee Bok-nim, in 2025.
