Here stands Guryongsa Temple a testament to time and legends. Guryongsa Temple is nestled six kilometers from Birobong Peak. It lies on Chiaksan Mountain towards Hakkok-ri.

Let’s delve into the history of Guryongsa. Legend says Monk Uisang of the Silla Kingdom founded Guryongsa in 668. He named it Guryongsa during King Munmu’s reign. But historical analysis suggests a later construction. The architectural style of Daeungjeon Hall points to the reign of King Sukjong. He was the 19th King of the Joseon Dynasty. He reigned from 1674 to 1720.

The name Guryongsa is very interesting. “Gu” means nine and “ryong” means dragons. A captivating legend explains this. The temple site was once a lake inhabited by nine dragons. To build the temple, the lake had to be filled. Hence the name Guryongsa was born from this legend.

Guryongsa Temple boasts several significant buildings. Daeungjeon Hall stands as a central structure. You will also see Bogwangnu Pavilion, Samseonggak Pavilion, Simgeomdang Hall, and Seolseondang Hall. Daeungjeon Hall has remarkably maintained its original form. It has survived many repairs throughout the years.

Let’s talk about Daeungjeon Hall’s architecture. It showcases the basic Dapojip style prevalent during the Joseon Era. Its shape resembles the Chinese character 八. It features three rooms in the front and two on the sides. What’s truly amazing is that it was built without using any nails. It is designated as Tangible Cultural Property No.24.

Inside Daeungjeon Hall, you’ll find Samjonmokbul. These Buddhist statues reflect the artistry of the Joseon Period. The Seokgamuni figure takes center stage. Two Bosal statues flank it on each side. They harmonize with the building’s structure. Other Buddhist artifacts enrich the temple’s spiritual ambiance. Bogwangru is one such treasure.

For those inclined to hiking, Guryongsa offers access to several trails. One popular course leads to Seryeompokpo Falls and Birobong Peak. The round trip covers 10.9 km. It takes about six hours to complete. Other trails connect to various peaks and valleys. Each offers a unique perspective of the surrounding landscape.

Planning a visit? Guryongsa Temple welcomes visitors from sunrise to sunset all year round. There is an admission fee. Adults pay 2500 won. Teenagers pay 800 won and children 500 won. Parking facilities are available for a fee within Chiaksan National Park.

Guryongsa offers a Temple Stay program for a deeper experience. Here, you can engage in a retreat or an experiential program. For detailed information visit the temple’s homepage.
