Founded in 895 AD Gwaneumsa Temple stands proudly in Seoul. It’s a testament to enduring faith. Nestled on the northern slopes of Mount Gwanaksan this Buddhist temple holds a rich history.
Doseon-guksa a famed monk established Gwaneumsa. He envisioned a Bibosa temple. These temples aimed to protect the nation. Their auspicious locations ensured prosperity through prayer. This was based on the principles of pungsu-jiri.
Records from the Goryeo Dynasty are scarce. Documents like the Sinjeung Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam confirm its existence during the Joseon Dynasty. Kim Moon-geun Prince Yeongeun donated 1000 gold coins in 1863. This funded renovations. Abbot Seokju expanded Gwaneumsa in 1924. He reconstructed the Daebang Hall. The monks’ dorms followed in 1925. The temple’s construction continued through the decades.
The Iljumun Gate welcomes visitors. A stone staircase leads to the Myeongbu-jeon Hall. Murals depict the Siwang. They also show Jijang-bosal and the Banya Yongseon-do. Notice the man trying to rescue a loved one. Inside a golden Jijang-bosal statue almost seems to purse its lips. Statues of the Siwang stand behind glass.
A unique nine-story pagoda stands nearby. It barely tapers upwards. It lacks any relief. The Jong-ru Pavilion houses a bronze bell. Both were made in the 1980s. The Samseong-gak Hall’s murals depict Wonhyo-daesa and Uisang-daesa. Beautiful lotus flowers adorn the exterior. Inside a central Chilseong relief is surrounded by other figures. There are also Nahan statues.
The Yongwang-dang Hall houses a Yongwang relief. Two dragons accompany him. The large outdoor Gwanseeum-bosal shrine is stunning. The statue has a plump face and a large crown. A ewer of medicinal ambrosia rests in her hand.
Finally the Daeung-jeon Hall awaits. Fierce dragons greet visitors near the signboard. Inside a triad of statues stands on the main altar. Seokgamoni-bul is flanked by Munsu-bosal and Bohyeon-bosal. Murals of an elephant riding Bohyeon-bosal and a lion riding Munsu-bosal complete the scene.
