How about stepping into a place where faith has moved mountains and continues to shape lives? That’s exactly what awaits us at the Yoido Full Gospel Church. This isn’t just any church. It’s a Pentecostal powerhouse affiliated with the Assemblies of God.

Originally known as Full Gospel Central Church, Yoido Full Gospel Church emerged from humble beginnings. David Yonggi Cho and Choi Ja-shil founded it in 1958. The first service took place in Choi Ja-shil’s home. Only a few people attended. Among them were Choi’s three daughters and an elderly woman escaping the rain.

From that tiny gathering, Yoido Full Gospel Church experienced explosive growth. Cho and Choi actively reached out to the community. They offered spiritual guidance and practical help to those in need. The church quickly outgrew its initial space. Services moved to a tent in Choi’s backyard. But even that soon became too small.

Cho’s message of the Three-Fold Blessing resonated deeply. He preached blessings for the spirit, soul, and body. Many people were drawn to the message of hope and prosperity. By 1961, the church had grown to a thousand members. It acquired its first plot of land in Seodaemun.

During the 1960s, Yoido Full Gospel Church continued to expand. Cho implemented a cell-based structure. This involved dividing the city into zones. Church members met in small groups for worship and Bible study. Women played a vital role as cell leaders. This went against Korean cultural norms at the time. The cell concept proved incredibly successful.

In 1973, the church moved to Yoido Island. At the time, it was mostly sand dunes. The new auditorium could seat 12000 people. It marked a significant milestone. Membership soared to 50000 by 1977.

Throughout the 1980s, Yoido Full Gospel Church established satellite churches. This addressed the challenge of accommodating its ever-growing congregation. In 1993, membership reached a staggering 700000. Guinness Book of World Records recognized it as the world’s largest congregation.

The Yoido Full Gospel Church has also established numerous ministries. These extend both locally and internationally. Osanri Choi Ja-sil Memorial Fasting Prayer Mountain is one example. It offers a place for people to fast and pray. It attracts over a million visitors each year.

The Yoido Full Gospel Church has sent missionaries worldwide. They spread their message. They focus on the “Fivefold Gospel,” “Triple Blessing,” and the Holy Spirit movement. Today, the church has missionaries in many countries. They have established numerous churches and guided countless people in their faith.

In 2024, the Yoido Full Gospel Church celebrated its 66th anniversary. It appointed its first six female elders. This reflects the church’s commitment to empowering women in leadership roles.

The Yoido Full Gospel Church stands as a testament to the power of faith. It shows how a small gathering can evolve into a global force for good. Its history is filled with stories of resilience, innovation, and unwavering devotion. As we stand here, we’re reminded that the Yoido Full Gospel Church’s journey is far from over. It continues to evolve and make a difference in the lives of many.
