Hidden high on the slopes of Mount Gwanaksan lies Gwaneumsa Temple. It’s not just any temple. It’s a testament to centuries of devotion, resilience, and the ebb and flow of Korean history. Gwaneumsa Temple, dedicated to the Bodhisattva of Compassion, offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city of Seoul below. Established in 895 AD by the revered monk Doseon-guksa, Gwaneumsa was originally conceived as a “Bibosa” temple. These temples were strategically placed according to principles of geomancy (pungsu-jiri) to protect the nation and ensure its prosperity through prayer. Imagine monks chanting ancient sutras, their voices echoing through the mountain air, carrying prayers for the well-being of the kingdom. While records of Gwaneumsa during the Goryeo Dynasty are scarce, its existence throughout the Joseon Dynasty is well-documented. Texts like the “Sinjeung Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam” and the “Yeojidoseo” confirm Gwaneumsa’s continued presence. Over the centuries, Gwaneumsa has seen periods of both prosperity and decline. In 1863, a generous donation from Prince Yeongeun allowed for significant renovations. Later, in the 20th century, the temple underwent further expansions and restorations under the guidance of various abbots. The Daebang Hall, monk’s dorms, Chilseong-gak Hall, Sanshin-gak Hall, and Yonghwa-jeon Hall were all either constructed or renovated. More recently, the Daeung-jeon Hall was rebuilt in 1982, and an outdoor shrine dedicated to Gwanseeum-bosal was added in 2005. As you explore Gwaneumsa Temple today, you’ll discover a blend of old and new. The vibrant Iljumun Gate welcomes you at the entrance, while the Myeongbu-jeon Hall houses a golden Jijang-bosal statue with a curiously pursed lip expression. Admire the chunky nine-story pagoda, unlike typical Korean pagodas with their gradual taper. Visit the Samseong-gak Hall with its murals of Wonhyo-daesa and Uisang-daesa. Finally, pay your respects at the outdoor shrine of Gwaneum-bosal, her plump face and large crown radiating compassion. Gwaneumsa Temple may not be the grandest or most famous temple in Seoul, but it offers a unique charm and a peaceful respite from the city’s frenetic pace. It’s a place where you can connect with Korea’s rich spiritual heritage and find a moment of tranquility amidst the natural beauty of Mount Gwanaksan.
