Tucked away on the northern slopes of Mount Gwanaksan lies Gwaneumsa Temple. It’s a tranquil escape from Seoul’s bustling city life. Don’t confuse this Gwaneumsa with others in Korea. This one holds a unique history. Gwaneumsa Temple’s story begins in 895 AD. Monk Doseon-guksa founded it as a “Bibosa” temple. These temples, based on principles of geomancy, were meant to protect the nation through prayer and strategic placement. Gwaneumsa is dedicated to Gwanseeum-bosal, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. The temple’s history winds through the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties. Records like the “Sinjeung Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam” confirm its existence. A significant renovation occurred in 1863. Prince Yeongeun, Kim Moon-geun, provided 1,000 gold coins. These funds allowed monk Haengnyeom to revitalize the temple. The 20th century saw further expansion. Abbot Seokju reconstructed the Daebang Hall in 1924. Monk’s dorms were restored in 1925. The Chilseong-gak Hall followed in 1929, the Sanshin-gak Hall in 1930, and the Yonghwa-jeon Hall in 1932. The Geukrak-jeon Hall was renovated in 1942. More recently, the Daeung-jeon Hall was rebuilt in 1982 under Abbot Jongha. An underground auditorium was added in 1993. Finally, an outdoor shrine to Gwanseeum-bosal was built in 2005, and the Iljumun Gate in 2007. This brings Gwaneumsa Temple to its present form. It’s a haven of peace nestled on the mountainside, offering solace and a glimpse into Korea’s rich Buddhist history. Gwaneumsa Temple continues to welcome visitors seeking tranquility and connection to the past.
