Deep within the heart of Gwacheon lies a hidden gem, the Ononsa Guesthouse. It whispers tales of bygone eras, of kings and scholars, and of a time when Gwacheon was a vital crossroads for travelers. Originally built in 1649 during the reign of King Injo, the Ononsa Guesthouse served as the main building of the gaeksa, an official lodging for government officials journeying through the provinces. Gwacheon’s gaeksa held a particular significance due to its location on the route used by Joseon Dynasty kings when traveling south. This royal connection elevated its status and resulted in a larger, more elaborate structure compared to gaeksas in other regions. The name “Ononsa” itself is steeped in royal history. King Jeongjo bestowed this name upon the guesthouse during his visit to Hyeonrungwon, praising the tranquil scenery and restful atmosphere. He declared that the surrounding scenery was nice and it was relaxing to rest there. The guesthouse also boasts a connection to a far-off place, Nagan Gaeksa. After suffering demolition and alterations during the Japanese occupation, Ononsa Guesthouse was meticulously restored in 1986, referencing the architectural style of Nagan Gaeksa located in Seungju-gun, Jeollanam-do. Today, Ononsa Guesthouse stands as a testament to Joseon Dynasty architecture, its nine-room frontage and gambrel roof echoing the elegance of the past. Imagine the bustle of activity within its walls, as officials and even royalty sought respite during their travels. Ononsa Guesthouse serves as a tangible link to Gwacheon’s rich history, reminding us of its important role in the Joseon Dynasty.
