Doesn’t the Main Hall at Korea University look like a fortress of knowledge? It stands proudly. Its stone walls seem to guard centuries of learning. We are standing before Korea University. It is more than just a school. It is a symbol of Korean resilience and aspiration.

Korea University’s story began in 1905. Yi Yong-ik founded it as Bosung College. He was the treasurer of the royal household. Emperor Gojong provided a royal grant. The school faced financial crises during the Japanese colonial period. Kim Seong-su revived it in 1932. He was a politician and newspaperman. In 1946, it became Korea University after Korea’s liberation.

Notice the Gothic architecture of the Main Hall. Kim Seong-su started its construction in 1933. It finished in 1934. Architect Park Dong-jin designed it. The building features a central tower and symmetrical wings. Granite was used. It symbolized strength against Japanese wooden structures.

Look closely at the entrance. Tiger heads are sculpted on the stone pillars. They represent the university’s spirit. A rose of Sharon is carved on the rear door. It is Korea’s national flower.

Korea University is one of Asia’s best schools. It boasts famous alumni. Lee Myung-bak was a former president. Kim Yuna is a gold medal-winning figure skater. Cha Bum-kun is considered the greatest Asian soccer player.

The campus has many beautiful buildings. The former Central Library now houses the graduate school. It features a five-story tower and intricate windows. The Korea University Museum is the country’s oldest university museum. It displays university history and Korean art.

The Centennial Memorial Samsung Hall showcases KU’s history. A scale model of the campus is displayed under glass panels. Exhibits cover the school’s development and student life. Old student IDs and textbooks are on display.

The campus also remembers times of protest. In 1975, Park Chung-hee ordered a military occupation of the campus. It lasted 41 days. It was in response to student demonstrations.

Korea University continues to thrive. It balances tradition and modernity. The campus is a testament to Korean pride and academic excellence. Take a moment to appreciate its history. Consider the generations of students who have walked these paths. They dreamed of a better future.
