Time slipped away unnoticed. I’m standing before the Donggureung Royal Tombs a breathtaking sight. These aren’t just any tombs. They are the resting places of seven Joseon Dynasty kings and their ten queen consorts. Imagine the power and history contained within these nine tumuli.

Donggureung located east of Seoul holds immense historical and cultural significance. It’s the largest royal tomb cluster of the Joseon Dynasty lasting from 1392 to 1910. The tombs themselves are a testament to traditional Korean architecture. Their beautiful landscaping blends harmoniously with the natural surroundings.

But did you know Donggureung wasn’t always called Donggureung? Initially it was known as Dongoreung meaning eastern five tombs. Later it became Dongchilneung eastern seven tombs. The name Donggureung dates to 1855 after the addition of Sureung. This tomb houses the posthumously named King Munjo and Empress Sinjeong.

Each tomb has a unique story. Geonwolleung for example houses King Taejo the dynasty’s founder. His tomb was built in 1408 by King Taejong. Mongneung holds the remains of King Seonjo his two queens Uiin and Inmok. Wolleung is home to King Yeongjo and his second queen Joengsun. Gyeongneung is truly exceptional. It’s a triple tomb housing King Heonjong and his two empresses Hyohyeon and Hyojeong.

The layout of the tombs reflects principles of pungsu geomancy. Mt Geoman acts as a guardian mountain. Most mounds sit halfway up the hill. A symbolic blue dragon is on the left. A white tiger rests on the right. Another mountain overlooks the tombs from the south. The tombs themselves display various mound types. There are dalleung single mounds sangneung twin mounds and even sanyeolleung triple parallel mounds.

The stele for King Taejo at Geonwolleung is a treasure. Erected in 1409 it recounts his life and the founding of the Joseon Dynasty. The stele’s dragon-shaped capstone main body and tortoise-shaped pedestal are remarkably well-preserved. It became a model for other royal steles. Renowned scholars Seon Seun and Byeon Gye-ryang composed the epitaphs. Jeong Gu wrote the stele’s name. Master calligrapher Seong Seok-rin inscribed the epitaphs. Even the reconstructed tortoise pedestal speaks volumes about the early Joseon period.

In 2009 UNESCO recognized the significance of the Donggureung Royal Tombs. They became a World Heritage Site. Their architectural style landscaping rituals and rich documentary heritage are unmatched. Today we stand as witnesses to this incredible piece of Korean history. Feel the weight of centuries the echoes of royalty the serenity of nature. Donggureung truly is a captivating journey through time.
