A meteor blazed across the night sky. That’s how the legend of Gang Gam-chan begins. Right here at Nakseongdae his birthplace in Seoul. This humble site marks the beginning of an extraordinary life.

Gang Gam-chan was a remarkable figure in Goryeo Dynasty history. He was a scholar a statesman and a military leader. He was born in 948 into an aristocratic family. His father served King Wang Geon. A story says a meteor fell near their house the night he was born. This site Nakseongdae means “place where a star fell”.

Gang Gam-chan’s life wasn’t just about meteors. He excelled in his studies mastering Confucian philosophy military tactics and martial arts. After his father’s death he traveled throughout Korea. In 983 he topped the civil service exam. He began his career in the royal court.

The Goryeo-Khitan Wars tested Gang Gam-chan’s mettle. The Khitans a powerful group from Manchuria invaded Korea several times. In 1010 the Khitan emperor led a huge army. Many officials wanted to surrender. Gang Gam-chan urged King Hyeonjong to resist and flee. He masterminded strategies to push back the Khitans.

In 1018 another Khitan invasion occurred. Again many favored surrender. But Gang Gam-chan saw an opportunity. The Khitan force was smaller than before. He advised war. At seventy-one he volunteered to be second-in-command. He ended up leading a large army.

The Battle of Heunghwajin was a turning point. Gang Gam-chan cleverly dammed a stream. He released the dam’s water as the Khitans crossed. Thousands drowned. This victory didn’t end the war. The Khitans continued their advance. They faced relentless resistance. Gang Gam-chan anticipated their retreat. He prepared an ambush at the fortress of Kwiju. The Khitans were defeated decisively. This resounding victory at the Battle of Kwiju ended the war.

Gang Gam-chan became a national hero. He secured peace with the Khitans. The peace lasted for about a century. He was appointed Prime Minister in 1030. He died in 1031.

Today we stand at Nakseongdae. We remember Gang Gam-chan the man whose life began under a falling star. He defended Korea. He became one of Korea’s greatest military leaders. His legacy continues to inspire. His story reminds us of courage strategy and the enduring spirit of Korea.
