Hidden amongst the bustling city lies Longtian Habitation. This courtyard house whispers tales of Shenzhen’s past. It stands as one of the most complete examples of a Hakka walled village remaining in Shenzhen. Built in 1837 Longtian Habitation has witnessed centuries unfold.
Its history is interwoven with the Huang family. This prominent clan shaped the region’s development. The house itself is a testament to their skill and ingenuity. Notice the water gate. It’s a unique feature. It was damaged during wartime. Later it was painstakingly restored by overseas Huang family members. Their dedication honors their ancestral roots.
The defensive design is impressive. Three large gates provided access. They were reinforced with multiple security mechanisms. These included clever systems to extinguish fires. If invaders breached the outer walls water could be poured down from the gate. This would douse any flames.
Each corner boasted a watchtower. These were equipped with cannons. The cannons protected the village from attacks. The towers were more than just defense structures. They formed a harmonious part of the architecture.
Inside the main courtyard you’ll find the ancestral hall. It stands as a symbol of family respect and heritage. The inscription above the entrance reads “Diligence and prosperity”. This reflects the family’s hopes for future generations. The walls display exquisite carvings. They narrate the family’s stories.
The left wing served many functions. It stored food and tools. It also housed a workshop. Craftspeople worked here creating local products. Animals were raised here too. The right wing was the residence for the head of the family and his children. The rear served as a kitchen dining area and storage rooms. A well provided water for drinking and washing. A second well inside provided a backup water source. This was vital if the main gate was compromised.
Longtian Habitation’s restoration was a labour of love. It took two years of careful work. The building was revitalized. Its historical significance was fully preserved. Now it stands proud. A window into Shenzhen’s rich and compelling history.
