“Isn’t that bridge stunning at night?” a child’s voice broke through the city’s hum. We’re standing before Liede Bridge, a true gem of Guangzhou. Officially known as 猎德大桥, this isn’t just a bridge; it’s a symbol of the city’s progress and innovation. Completed in 2009, it’s a relatively new addition to Guangzhou’s skyline, but it has quickly become iconic. Liede Bridge spans the Pearl River, connecting Pazhou Island with Tianhe District. This 4.3-kilometer marvel isn’t just about functionality; it’s a work of art. Its single tower, designed like two interlocking shells, soars 128 meters high, a testament to engineering ingenuity. The bridge’s graceful curves and the elegant sweep of its cables create a sense of fluidity, almost as if it’s dancing across the water. The construction of Liede Bridge was a feat of engineering, overcoming several technical challenges. The tower’s unique shell shape required meticulous precision, using non-reusable formwork and CNC technology. The installation of the 3-dimensional, self-anchored, cable-stayed system was another hurdle, with 28 steel ropes branching out from the main cables, gripping the bridge deck and transferring pressure to the tower and anchors. Even the steel girders, spanning up to 60 meters, posed a challenge during the pushing process, demanding constant monitoring and control. The innovative solutions employed earned the project team patents and recognition for “Four New” achievements. Even French President Emmanuel Macron was captivated by Liede Bridge’s beauty, sharing a video of its dazzling light show after his visit to China in 2024. The bridge’s design complements the nearby Canton Tower, creating a stunning visual harmony. Liede Bridge is not merely a crossing; it’s an integral part of Guangzhou’s urban landscape. It connects key districts, facilitating the flow of life and commerce. It stands as a symbol of connection, innovation, and the city’s embrace of modern architecture while respecting its historical context. As you gaze upon Liede Bridge, remember the ingenuity that brought it to life and the beauty it adds to Guangzhou’s vibrant tapestry.
