Hidden in plain sight, small lions perch atop the larger stone lions of the Marco Polo Bridge. Can you spot them? This bridge, also known as Lugou Bridge, stretches across the Yongding River, just 15 kilometers southwest of Beijing’s bustling center. Marco Polo himself, the 13th-century Venetian traveler, marveled at this very bridge. He described it as “a very fine stone bridge, so fine indeed, that it has very few equals in the world.” Constructed entirely of granite, the Marco Polo Bridge spans an impressive 266.5 meters. It’s supported by eleven graceful segmental arches. But the true magic lies in the hundreds of stone lions, over 500 by some counts, that stand guard along its sides. Each large lion, unique in its pose, has smaller lions adorning its head, back, and paws. These hidden lions add a layer of intrigue to the bridge’s already rich history. The Marco Polo Bridge isn’t just a beautiful structure; it’s also a significant historical site. On July 7, 1937, the Marco Polo Bridge Incident, also known as the “Seven Seven Incident,” took place here. This event marked the beginning of the Second Sino-Japanese War. Today, the bridge stands as a testament to both exquisite artistry and a pivotal moment in history. The nearby Museum of the War of Chinese People’s Resistance Against Japanese Aggression offers a deeper dive into this crucial period.
