“Could this unassuming spot truly hold centuries of stories?” I wonder aloud. Right here we stand before Tsurumi Shrine in Osaka. It is more than just a place of worship. It is a testament to time.
Tsurumi Shrine’s history stretches back to ancient times. Legend says it began around 1407 years ago. This was during the reign of Emperor Suiko. Originally it was known as Sugiyama Daimyojin. In 1920 the shrine’s name changed to Tsurumi Shrine.
The shrine grounds once covered about five thousand tsubo. That is a considerable area. “Imagine this entire space filled with ancient trees and sacred energy,” I suggest.
Tsurumi Shrine has seen many changes throughout its long history. In 838 AD historical records mention Sugiyama Shrine. This indicates its importance centuries ago. During the Kamakura period Minamoto Yoritomo visited the shrine.
Local lore connects the name “Tsurumi” to Minamoto Yoritomo. When he visited the area he released cranes. These cranes had tags with golden short books attached. The sight of these cranes was remarkable. People from far and wide came to see them. This event led to the area being called “Tsurumi.”
Tsurumi Shrine has several smaller shrines within its grounds. These include Sumiyoshi Shrine and Kuki Inari Shrine. Each has its own unique history. The shrine also features the couple’s camphor tree a protected tree.
Throughout the Edo period Tsurumi Shrine thrived. It became a popular spot along the Tokaido road. Travelers often stopped here to pray. They also enjoyed the tea houses around the shrine.
In 1872 Tsurumi Shrine became a village shrine. Later its main building was renovated. In 1969 the main hall prayer hall and other structures were rebuilt. These were rebuilt using reinforced concrete in the style of Kasuga Taisha.
Tsurumi Shrine suffered damage from fire in the Meiji era. Sparks from a steam train caused the destruction. The shrine was rebuilt. This shows the community’s commitment to preserving it.
Excavations around Tsurumi Shrine have revealed ancient artifacts. These finds suggest the area was sacred long before the shrine’s official founding. These artifacts date back to the Yayoi and Kofun periods. “Think about the people who walked this ground thousands of years ago” I muse. “They too sought solace and connection to the divine.”
Tsurumi Shrine holds several annual festivals. The most famous is the Autumn Festival. It features two danjiri floats. These floats are about 130 years old. They parade through the local area. This event is known as Tsurumi’s Danjiri Festival.
Tsurumi Shrine is dedicated to warding off evil. It is also dedicated to curing sickness and promoting longevity. People come here to pray for good health. They also pray for protection.
