“Did the earth whisper secrets here?” a child’s voice asked, echoing the curiosity many feel at Kinkakuji’s ruins. Once, this place throbbed with life. This wasn’t always a quiet expanse of earth and stone. This was Kinkakuji, or Kaide Kouryuji, a sprawling temple complex. Imagine it in the year 1397. The shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, seeking respite from the world’s clamor, built his retirement villa here. He named it Kitayama-dono. It wasn’t a simple dwelling. Thirteen buildings graced the landscape. The shogun, a patron of the arts, filled Kinkakuji with the finest crafts. Sword-making, ceramics, and the nascent Noh theatre flourished under his patronage, creating what we now know as Kitayama Culture. Even emperors walked these grounds. Upon Yoshimitsu’s death in 1408, his wish was fulfilled. Kitayama-dono transformed into Rokuon-ji, a Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple. The name Rokuon-ji came from the shogun’s posthumous religious title, Rokoun-in-den. A new chapter began for Kinkakuji. Later, during the Edo period, a magnificent main temple was built. It measured an impressive 120 meters east to west and 140 meters north to south. This grand structure housed the original southern section of Rokuon-ji. Eventually, this main temple merged with the nearby Ishiki-ji Temple and faded into history, leaving these remnants for us to ponder. The grounds whisper of ambition, artistry, and the transient nature of power. Kinkakuji stands as a testament to a bygone era.
