Torikaikita Elementary School. That’s where we are today, friends. A relatively young school compared to some ancient temples we’ve seen, it holds a vibrant history all its own. Torikaikita Elementary, nestled in Settsu City, Osaka, opened its doors in 1982. It was established to address the burgeoning population south of the Anigawa River and alleviate overcrowding in three existing schools: Ajiyoshi Elementary, Torikai Nishi Elementary, and Torikai Elementary. Torikaikita Elementary School became the eleventh school in Settsu City. The school’s name and emblem were chosen through submissions from people connected to the school district. The winning entries were combined to create the official school identity we see today. Torikaikita Elementary sits at 5-10-1 Torikaihonmachi, a location officially established in 1984. Imagine those early days, a brand new school, full of promise and the echoing laughter of children. The original school song, composed in 1982 with lyrics by Masayoshi Soba and music by Yumiko Hashimoto, still resonates within these walls. Over the years, Torikaikita Elementary School has seen many changes. In 1994, classrooms were renovated and a computer lab was added, equipped with 21 computers. That same year, the school pool was renovated, and the following year, the entire schoolyard got a makeover. In 1996, the old incinerator was removed and a garbage station was installed. The school embraced technology early on, participating in the Mishima area internet research project in 1999 and launching its own homepage in 2000. By 2001, a counseling room was opened, internet-ready PCs were installed, and the school celebrated its 20th anniversary. Even in recent years, Torikaikita Elementary has continued to evolve. A full-scale pool renovation in 2010, a 30th-anniversary celebration in 2011, and the introduction of a special needs classroom in 2018 all speak to the school’s commitment to growth and adaptation. Today, Torikaikita Elementary School thrives with over 400 students and 20 classes. The energy of learning and growth is palpable, a testament to the dedication of its teachers and the vibrancy of its student body.
