It commemorates the clash that set the stage for the Boshin War and the Meiji Restoration. Saigo Takamori, a key figure in the conflict, marched towards Kyoto with his troops. He divided his forces, sending some along Fushimi Street and others along Toba Street. At Kogibashi Bridge, they encountered resistance from the new government’s troops. The ensuing battle between the Shogunate and Imperial forces raged across Toba, Fushimi, and Kyoto. The Kogibashi Bridge became a focal point. Here, an intense exchange took place, escalating into a full-blown conflict. The Shogunate forces, attempting to advance north along Bird Street, met the new government troops. The memorial’s inscription details the tense parley. The Shogunate forces demanded passage, claiming an urgent mission to Kyoto. The new government troops refused, unaware of such a mission. The standoff broke with a volley of gunfire. The Shogunate troops fired an Armstrong cannon, igniting the Battle of Toba-Fushimi. This clash involved 15,000 Shogunate troops against 6,000 new government troops. The battle marked the beginning of the Boshin War, which concluded later that summer.
