“Did you know that the Jiugongqiao Bridge was once closed for a whole month?” I ask. The Jiugongqiao Bridge in Chengdu stands before us a testament to engineering and urban planning. It connects the main urban area with the Qingyang district. This wasn’t always a smooth journey.

For years the Jiugongqiao Bridge suffered from traffic congestion. It’s about 590 meters long and 25.5 meters wide. It has two lanes in each direction. Even with a tram line running down the middle easing the flow of traffic proved challenging.

In 2018 construction began. One side of the bridge was closed at a time to minimize disruption. The project aimed to improve traffic flow. This was a major undertaking. Imagine the logistical nightmare. Half the bridge closed. The remaining lanes packed with vehicles.

Local resident Wang Caifeng recalls the difficulties. “After the bridge closure” she says “my commute became a nightmare. I had to travel via the Waizhou Bridge. It added hours to my daily journey.”

Finally in December 2021 the project finished. The Jiugongqiao Bridge fully reopened. Temporary traffic lights and barriers were removed. Cars trams and pedestrians could move freely.

Now Wang Caifeng’s commute is much easier. “Since the reopening” she explains “I can cross the river directly from the Jiugongqiao Bridge. I’ve saved at least half an hour every day.” The renovation of the Jiugongqiao Bridge wasn’t simply about infrastructure. It was about improving the lives of the people who use it. The bridge is a symbol of Chengdu’s progress. It is a vital artery in the city’s transportation network. This is more than just a bridge it’s a significant improvement to the daily lives of commuters.
