“Imagine a kettle so versatile it could be used for hot water, tea, sake, and even finger food.” That’s how people in Edo-period Takatsuki described the “Douko” kettle. You can see several examples right here at the Takatsuki City Museum of History and Folklore. This museum offers a unique glimpse into the daily life of Takatsuki’s residents during the Edo period. The building itself, a restored merchant’s house dating back 300 years, is a designated Tangible Cultural Property.

The Takatsuki City Museum of History and Folklore houses a collection of everyday utensils, farming tools, and other artifacts that tell the story of the city’s past. As you explore the museum, you’ll notice the distinctive white walls and the traditional Japanese roof construction known as “Honmune-zukuri.” This style, with its combination of a hipped roof and a gable roof, is a testament to the region’s architectural heritage and a link to the styles prevalent in Kyoto and Nara.

Originally, this building belonged to the Sasano family, who were merchants in the city. They started as dried food sellers, moved on to ceramics, and amazingly, their descendants continue to operate a rice shop to this day! In the museum, you’ll find exhibits detailing the Sasano family history and the evolution of their businesses.

The Takatsuki City Museum of History and Folklore is more than just a collection of objects; it offers a tangible connection to the lives and traditions of the people who lived here centuries ago.
