Amidst the aroma of freshly baked bread, a question arises. What stories do the walls of the 首都粮食博物馆 whisper? The 首都粮食博物馆 stands as a testament to Beijing’s intricate relationship with food. Located in the vibrant Damiaochang Cultural and Creative Park, the museum occupies a former flour mill. This mill traces its roots back to 1918, marking over a century of grain processing history in the city. The 首都粮食博物馆 opened its doors on October 16, 2019. It was established by the Beijing Grain Group to preserve and promote the capital’s rich food culture. It serves as a valuable resource for both locals and visitors alike. The museum also proudly holds the titles of National Food Security Education Base and Beijing Food Safety Publicity and Education Base. It actively promotes food safety awareness. The 首都粮食博物馆 spans approximately 1000 square meters. It features three distinct exhibition areas: “Tracing the Roots of Food,” “Millennium Canal, Imperial Capital’s Grain Transportation,” and “Livelihood Security, the Capital’s Grain Barns.” The museum showcases over 500 artifacts and 400 photographs. These exhibits vividly portray the journey of food from its origins to modern-day consumption. The museum meticulously captures the evolution of food processing. It depicts the ingenuity of ancient farmers with ancient tools like the quern and the treadwheel. The museum recreates historical scenes, transporting visitors to the bustling grain transportation hub along the Grand Canal. This brings the city’s rich history to life. The transformation of Beijing’s dining tables since the founding of New China is also documented. It charts the progress from basic sustenance to culinary abundance. The museum captures the essence of local food culture. The 首都粮食博物馆 resides within the Damiaochang Cultural and Creative Park. This park is the site of the former Beijing Damiaochang Flour Mill. This mill boasts a century-long history, originating with the Tianmin Mechanized Flour Mill established in 1918. The mill evolved through several stages, eventually becoming the Beijing Damiaochang Flour Company. In 1982, it introduced Beijing’s first ever automated instant noodle production line from Japan. In 1992, it further modernized with Swiss equipment, achieving a daily processing capacity of 200 tons. Following the city’s development, the mill ceased operations in 2014, with production moving outside the city center. Today, the area has been transformed into the Damiaochang Cultural and Creative Park. This transformation preserves the area’s industrial heritage. It now also houses the unique treasure of the 首都粮食博物馆. The museum is not only a repository of the city’s culinary heritage. It also stands as a symbol of the dedication and hard work of countless individuals who have ensured Beijing’s food security throughout history.
