What secrets does the Kadode Hachiman-Gu Shrine hold? This unassuming shrine, nestled in Kyoto’s Kamigyo-ku, whispers tales of ancient journeys and imperial protection. The Kadode Hachiman-Gu Stele stands as a testament to these stories. Let’s unravel its mysteries together. The Kadode Hachiman-Gu Stele marks a pivotal moment in the shrine’s history. It commemorates Minamoto no Yoshitsune’s visit in 1174. He prayed for safe passage on his journey to Mutsu Province. This visit solidified the shrine’s association with travel safety. “Kadode” itself means “departure,” reflecting this significance. The shrine’s original name was Uchino Hachiman-Gu. It enshrined Hondawake-no-Mikoto, Himegami, and Okinagatarashi-hime-no-Mikoto. Its location, near the northeast corner of the Imperial Palace, was considered inauspicious. However, this very placement led to the shrine’s revered status as the Palace’s guardian. Empresses, in particular, held it in high regard. The Kadode Hachiman-Gu is also linked to the tragic figure of Minamoto no Yoshitsune. He sought refuge and guidance at the shrine before embarking on his fateful journey. The shrine grounds also contain remnants of Crown Prince Sadasumi-shinnō’s residence. He was the sixth child of Emperor Seiwa. The Kadode Hachiman-Gu Stele thus stands at the intersection of history, legend, and spiritual significance. It’s a reminder of the power of faith, the weight of destiny, and the enduring allure of ancient traditions.
