High atop Mount Kurama stands Kurama-dera temple. Legend says its very foundation is steeped in magic. A disciple of the famed Chinese monk Ganjin had a dream. The dream revealed a place of immense spiritual energy. This was Mount Kurama.
The disciple Gancho followed this vision. He faced challenges including a terrifying female demon. Bishamonten a Heavenly King intervened saving Gancho. A small hermitage was built to honor this divine intervention. It later grew into the magnificent Kurama-dera temple.
Kurama-dera’s history is rich and fascinating. Minamoto no Yoshitsune a legendary samurai once resided there. The Taira clan hoped to keep him as a monk not a warrior. Yoshitsune however secretly trained in swordsmanship. His teacher was Sojobo the Tengu lord. This adds a mystical layer to the temple’s story.
The temple endured many fires. Yet its treasures always survived. This resilience speaks volumes about its enduring spiritual significance. The A-Un no Tora tiger-like sculptures at the Niomon gate are a testament to this endurance. Legend says Bishamonten descended with a tiger during a special alignment of the Chinese lunar calendar.
Kurama-dera is more than a temple. It’s a place where history spirituality and nature converge. It sits on Ryu-ketsu a dragon hole believed to be filled with divine energy. The main hall worships Sonten a trinity representing Power the Sun and Love. The temple also plays a role in the Kurama Fire Festival held at the nearby Yuki Shrine. This yearly spectacle involves a torchlight procession. It is a beautiful and memorable event.
