Tucked away in the residential streets of Kyoto, Kawashima Kasuga Jinja holds a secret history. This Shinto shrine, dedicated to the deities Kasuga Daimyojin, stands as a testament to the Kawashima family. They served as custodians of the Kawashima manor, originally the Kawashima Garden. This place wasn’t always a peaceful shrine. During the Heian period, it was part of a bustling agricultural estate. The Kawashima family, descendants of the Seiwa Genji and the Satake clan, managed the estate. They played a vital role in expanding the Kamo irrigation canals, a lifeline for the region since the 5th century. Their contributions led them to become prominent local figures. The Kawashimas’ influence extended to the shogunate, where they held the position of jito, a local administrator of estates. This elevated their status and solidified their control over the area. Unfortunately, their rise to power drew them into the conflicts of the Warring States period. Their allegiance to the Iwannari Tomomichi, a member of the Miyoshi clan, resulted in the confiscation of their lands. The Kawashima family faced a devastating loss, their power and holdings stripped away. However, their story doesn’t end there. Oda Nobunaga’s arrival in Kyoto marked a turning point for them. They regained their former lands and found stability. But after Nobunaga’s tragic death, they again fell victim to land confiscation, this time under Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Finally, under Tokugawa Ieyasu, they recovered their holdings for good, marking a new era of peace and prosperity. The shrine itself, nestled within the manor grounds, reflects this tumultuous past. Two stone guardian dogs, or komainu, greet visitors at the shrine’s entrance. Look closely. Notice the unusual golden color of one of the dogs. It is a rare sight, adding a touch of mystique to Kawashima Kasuga Jinja. Within the main hall resides Kasuga Daimyojin, the enshrined deity. Also, look for the enshrined deity Ukanomitama no Mikoto in the Ukemochi-sha, a smaller shrine located to the left of the main hall. Kawashima Kasuga Jinja offers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Kyoto’s history, whispering tales of powerful families, political intrigue, and unwavering faith.
