“High cliff valley” describes Qingshui Cliff perfectly. This rare coastal cliff offers a breathtaking scene. We are standing before Qingshui Cliff. It is a majestic natural wonder in Taiwan.
Qingshui Cliff is a 21-kilometer stretch of coastal cliffs. These cliffs rise dramatically from the Pacific Ocean. They average 800 meters above sea level. Qingshui Mountain is the tallest peak. It ascends 2408 meters directly from the ocean. This makes it the highest coastal cliff in Taiwan.
These cliffs reside within Taroko National Park. The Suhua Highway runs along the southern part of the cliff. It connects Yilan and Hualien counties. This area is known for its scenic beauty.
Qingshui Cliff’s geology is fascinating. The formation resulted from orogenic movement. The Philippine Plate and Eurasian Plate meet here. This created a fault line.
The outcropping above sea level is a metamorphic complex. It features limestone marble. Gneiss and green schist are also present. Very few coastal cliffs worldwide have such a great elevation drop. This makes Qingshui Cliff a unique geological site.
The Pacific Ocean constantly erodes the coast. Earthquakes and typhoons also affect the rock walls. The beaches below are filled with marble stones. These range in size from giant boulders to grains of sand.
Qingshui Cliff has faced political disputes. In 2012 the People’s Republic of China featured it in their passports. This triggered protests from Taipei to Beijing.
The cliff also has biogeographic importance. It acts as a dispersal barrier for some species. Brown tree frogs have eastern and western clades. These are separated by the cliff. Two sibling species of Takydromus lizards are also divided. The Liwu River is the specific separation point.
Transportation to Qingshui Cliff is straightforward. Heren Station on the Taiwan Railways is nearby.
Tragically a Taroko Express train derailed near the cliffs on April 2 2021. The accident occurred at the Daqingshui Tunnel entrance. A truck rolled onto the tracks causing the derailment. At least 51 people died in this terrible event.
Despite this tragedy Qingshui Cliff remains a stunning destination. Its natural beauty and geological significance captivate visitors.
