Humans inhabited the Shenzhen region during the Neolithic period. Now, we stand before 青排世居. It stands as a testament to Shenzhen’s rich history.

For much of its history, Shenzhen was a small fishing village known as Bao’an. Agriculture and fishing were the main activities. There was little indication of the massive urbanization to come.

In 1949, Shenzhen was still a rural backwater after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The Communist government focused on developing heavy industry elsewhere. Southern China remained primarily agricultural. Shenzhen’s proximity to Hong Kong made it strategically important.

The pivotal moment for Shenzhen came with Deng Xiaoping’s economic reforms in the late 1970s. Deng proposed Special Economic Zones where market-oriented reforms could be tested. Shenzhen was chosen as the first SEZ in 1980 due to its proximity to Hong Kong. This marked the beginning of Shenzhen’s transformation.

The SEZ allowed for more liberal economic policies. These included foreign investment and free-market practices. This was not permitted elsewhere in China at the time. Investment poured in from Hong Kong and international sources. Factories, infrastructure projects and housing developments sprang up rapidly. The population exploded. It went from around 30,000 in 1980 to over 10 million by the early 21st century.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Shenzhen became a major manufacturing center. It produced electronics, textiles and consumer goods for export. In the 21st century, Shenzhen evolved into a center for innovation and technology. The city is now home to some of China’s largest and most influential tech companies. These include Huawei and Tencent. Shenzhen has earned the nickname “China’s Silicon Valley.”

Shenzhen’s GDP has grown exponentially. By 2019, it exceeded that of neighboring Hong Kong. Shenzhen developed extensive infrastructure. This includes highways, bridges and an advanced public transportation system. The city is also known for its green spaces.

Shenzhen’s population is highly diverse. Migrants from all over China brought different regional cultures. This diversity has contributed to a vibrant cultural scene. The city has invested heavily in education and research. Shenzhen is often seen as a model for China’s economic reforms.

Shenzhen continues to be at the forefront of China’s economic and technological development. The city is a key part of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area. Shenzhen is likely to maintain its role as a leader in technology and innovation. It is investing in new industries. These are artificial intelligence, biotechnology and renewable energy.

青排世居 serves as a reminder of Shenzhen’s journey. From a small village to a global powerhouse. It stands as a beacon of innovation.
