Construction on this impressive structure finished in 2005, costing a staggering US$400 million. The Shenzhen Western Corridor Bridge isn’t just one bridge, but a series of structures. It stretches 3.8 kilometers, featuring approach spans, connector spans, and of course, the majestic navigation channel spans like the one we admire today: the Qingzhou Channel Bridge. These channel spans are asymmetrical single-tower cable-stayed bridges, with the Qingzhou Channel boasting the longest main span at approximately 458 meters. Imagine the complexity of building such a bridge, especially considering the deep waters and the need for a visually innovative design. The engineers faced a challenging task. They had to account for high seismic activity in the area. The construction process itself was a feat of meticulous planning and execution. The engineers utilized precast and prefabrication techniques. This minimized disruption to marine life and ensured high-quality construction. Think of massive steel towers, each weighing about 3,100 tonnes for the Jianghai Channel Bridge, being transported and erected on site. The bridge decks, made of 420,000 tonnes of steel – that’s the weight of 60 Eiffel Towers – were assembled piece by piece. The deck area is enormous, equivalent to about 98 football pitches! Even the road surfacing was a massive undertaking, requiring 100,000 tonnes of bituminous materials.
