“A sacred mirror,” they say. That’s where the name Reikan-ji comes from. We’re standing before a serene temple with a story that whispers through the ages.

Reikan-ji Temple is a Rinzai sect nunnery. It was founded in 1654 by Tari no Miya. She was the daughter of the retired Emperor Go-Mizunoo. She became its first abbess. This temple maintained its monzeki tradition until the Meiji Restoration. That means imperial princesses served as chief priests here for generations.

The main hall before you was built in 1803. It replaced an older structure. It houses a statue of the Nyoirin Kannon. This statue is believed to be the principal image of Nyoidera Temple.

Reikan-ji Temple is only open to the public for two short periods each year. Usually, it is open the first two weeks of April and the last two weeks of November. This exclusivity adds to its allure. The temple is a hidden gem. It is often missed by foreign tourists. If you are lucky enough to visit when it’s open, you’re in for a treat.

The garden you see is typical of the Edo period. It features moss and standing stones. Originally a pond fed by mountain waters, it’s now a dry landscape. A testament to time’s passage.

Reikan-ji is famed for its camellias. Emperor Gomizunoo loved these flowers. Over 100 varieties are planted here. You can find Nikko camellias, scattered camellias and white peony camellias. Maizuru camellias are here too. They bloom in a riot of colors. The temple even opens specifically for camellia viewing in January and February.

Look closely at that maple tree. It is over 350 years old. It is said to be the oldest in Kyoto City. It is a silent witness to the temple’s long history. In autumn the grounds transform. The many red maples create a breathtaking spectacle.

Just above The Philosopher’s Path Reikan-ji offers tranquility. It is a retreat from the bustling city. It is a place to connect with history and nature.
As you leave Reikan-ji Temple, remember the sacred mirror. Remember the imperial princesses. Remember the camellias and the ancient maple. Carry a piece of this serene beauty with you.
