“Why cloud and thunder?” That’s the question echoing in the name of Unraiji Temple. Welcome to Unraiji Temple a Nichiren Buddhist temple. It stands here in Osaka’s Chuo district.
Unraiji Temple’s story began over four centuries ago. It was founded between 1573 and 1591. The priest Niccho, along with Sakubei Kashiwabaraya, established a building.
Later in 1598 the temple moved to its current location. This relocation happened due to the policies of Lord Hideyoshi Toyotomi.
However tragedy struck in 1945. The Great Osaka Air Raid destroyed everything except the temple gate. The current main hall dates back to 1957. Later renovations added the abbot’s quarters in 1964 and a reception hall in 1975.
But what about the name Unraiji? It comes from a passage in the Lotus Sutra. It speaks of clouds rising and thunder rumbling. After the thunder rain begins to fall. The rain gives blessings to everything in the world. Then sunlight shines through the clouds. The appearance of thunderclouds signals new light and blessings. That’s the idea behind Unraiji Temple’s name.
Unraiji Temple is associated with the Nichiren sect. Nichiren Buddhism emerged during the Kamakura period. Its founder Nichiren believed the Lotus Sutra held the key to enlightenment. He saw it as the complete teaching of Buddha. Nichiren spread the message. He chanted Namu Myoho Renge Kyo.
Today Unraiji Temple continues to be a place of worship. It hosts events. It even provides a space for music. The temple collaborated with musicians for music videos. Golden Graffiti used Unraiji Temple in 2011. Arkemis filmed two videos here in 2019 and 2022.
