It is also known as the Chen Clan Academy or Chen Clan Temple. The \u9648\u4f53\u5168\u516c\u7eaa\u5ff5\u5ead stands as a testament to clan identity and artistic achievement.

Imagine the late Qing Dynasty. In 1894, the \u9648\u4f53\u5168\u516c\u7eaa\u5ff5\u5ead was completed. It was a shared clan temple funded by Chen clan members from 72 counties in Guangdong Province. The \u9648\u4f53\u5168\u516c\u7eaa\u5ff5\u5ead served a dual purpose. It was for ancestor worship and for training clansmen for imperial examinations. Chen Ruinan and Zhaonan proposed building this temple. They sought donations from various Chen lineages.

Consider the architecture before you. The \u9648\u4f53\u5168\u516c\u7eaa\u5ff5\u5ead exemplifies the Lingnan architectural style. It is the largest most elaborate and best-preserved traditional structure in Guangdong. People call it a gem of Lingnan artistic architecture.

Note the symmetrical layout. The complex includes 19 buildings. They have nine halls and six courtyards. Corridors connect these structures. The layout follows a north-south axis. The Head-entrance the Gathering Hall and the Back Hall lie on this axis separated by courtyards.

The iron engravings are unique. They mainly appear on platform railings. The engravings display symmetric patterns with themes like “The Qilin and the Phoenix.”

In 1959, the \u9648\u4f53\u5168\u516c\u7eaa\u5ff5\u5ead became the Guangdong Museum of Folk Arts. It showcases folk handicrafts from Guangdong and beyond. Exhibits include pottery embroidery and sculptures. These reflect Lingnan’s folk customs.

During the Cultural Revolution local officials protected the artwork. They installed a printshop for Mao Zedong’s works.
