Awata Jinja Shrine whispers stories of ancient travelers. Here at Awata Jinja Shrine, long before the bustling metropolis of modern Kyoto, travelers would pause. They would offer prayers for safe passage on the Tokaido Road, the vital artery connecting Kyoto to Edo, now Tokyo. Awata Jinja Shrine, nestled in the northern Higashiyama district, has witnessed centuries of comings and goings. Its history stretches back even before Kyoto became Japan’s capital in 794. The shrine takes its name from the Awata clan who resided in this area. During the Edo period (1603-1868), the shrine’s significance grew as the starting point of the Tokaido Road. Countless travelers sought blessings before embarking on their journeys. The shrine grounds offer a unique vantage point. In August, on the 16th, you can witness the Gozan Okuribi bonfires. The massive flames of Funagata and Hidari Daimonji illuminate the sky. Even today, Awata Jinja Shrine remains a vibrant hub of activity. Each year, it hosts the Awata Taisai festival, a spectacular display of color and tradition. Over 200 people carry mikoshi, portable shrines, through the streets. Others balance towering spears, some reaching 8 meters high and weighing 60kg, a testament to strength and skill. As night falls, the procession of colorful lanterns casts a magical glow, a sight that truly encapsulates the spirit of Awata Jinja. So, stand here, at Awata Jinja Shrine, and feel the echoes of history beneath your feet. Imagine the prayers whispered by countless travelers over the centuries, seeking safe passage and good fortune on their journeys.
