“What exactly is enshrined here at the Abeno Shrine Stele?” you might wonder. Abeno Shrine is a Shinto shrine in Osaka. It holds deep historical and cultural importance. Let’s delve into the story behind it.

Abeno Shrine was founded in 1882. It enshrines the kami or spirits of Kitabatake Chikafusa and Kitabatake Akiie. These figures were central to the Kenmu Restoration. This restoration was an effort to revive imperial rule in the 14th century. Abeno Shrine is recognized as one of the Fifteen Shrines of the Kenmu Restoration.

Kitabatake Akiie is particularly significant. Emperor Go-Daigo deeply trusted him. Akiie played a vital role in overthrowing the Kamakura Shogunate. He helped implement the Kenmu Restoration. Abeno Shrine sits on an ancient battlefield where Akiie fought. It is near his burial site.

In 1885, Kitabatake Chikafusa was also enshrined here. He was Akiie’s father. He was a central figure of the Southern Court. This marked the shrine’s establishment.

The main festival occurs on January 24 annually. A summer festival is held on July 22. It includes a procession to Akiie’s tomb in Kitabatake Park. A purification ceremony called Natsukoshi no Harae is also performed. It prays for safety during the summer.

Abeno Shrine has several subordinate shrines. Mitamafuri no Miya enshrines Amaterasu Omikami. Miwa Omi-kami and Sukunahikona no Mikoto are also enshrined. Sugawara no Michizane is on the left. This shrine is known as “Ichigan-ittsu no Miya.” People believe it helps fulfill wishes.

Isao no Miya honors Nanbu Shigeyuki. He was the head of the Nanbu clan. He bravely defended the area during Akiie’s absence. Shigeyuki fought alongside Akiie and died in battle.

Soreisha enshrines past priests and worshippers of Abeno Shrine. It is believed that the spirits of the deceased become guardian deities. They protect their families.

Tsuchimiya is dedicated to Shirahime Daimyojin. This deity is the guardian of Abeno Shrine’s land. Hataage Inari Shrine enshrines Toyouke Inari Omikami. It also enshrines Takakura Daimyojin, Shirataka Daimyojin, and Fukuryu Daijin. Hataage Geino Inari Shrine is dedicated to Omiya no Me no Okami. She is the god of performing arts.

Abeno Shrine also features a sacred horse statue. Akiie rode a horse from Tohoku to Kyoto. The horse was essential to him. The original statue was lost in the war. New statues were placed in the Heisei era. The two facing horse statues symbolize bonds and communication. They are believed to ensure safety in transportation.

Abeno Shrine offers a wide range of spiritual benefits. The shrine’s history and the deities enshrined make it a unique place. As you reflect on Abeno Shrine Stele, remember the stories of those enshrined here. Consider their dedication to justice. Think about their contributions to Japanese history.
