Established in 1975, the Institute of Disaster Prevention (IDP) stands as a testament to China’s commitment to disaster preparedness. This unique institution, nestled within Beijing, isn’t just any university. It’s China’s sole higher education institute dedicated to disaster prevention, reduction, and relief. The IDP is more than just classrooms and labs. It’s a hub of knowledge, a training ground for the nation’s first responders, and a research center pushing the boundaries of disaster science. Originally known as the Tianshui Seismological School, the IDP has evolved over decades. It relocated to Yanjiao in 1983, becoming the Seismological School of China’s Earthquake Administration. It then transformed into the Seismic Technical College in 1985, and later the College of Disaster Prevention Techniques in 1992. Finally, in 2006, it adopted its current name and began offering undergraduate programs. Today, the Institute of Disaster Prevention boasts a vibrant student body of over 9400, drawing aspiring disaster management professionals from across the country. The IDP offers a wide range of programs, spanning undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, vocational training, and continuing education for professionals.
