Built in 1703 the Xishiku Church also known as the Church of the Saviour or the North Church in Beijing stands before you. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and survival. Imagine the humble beginnings. Two Jesuit priests Father Jean de Rocha and Father Antoine de la Chaise. They received a plot of land from the emperor himself. This was not just any land. It was near the Forbidden City a symbol of imperial power.

The original church the North Church stood at Canchikou. It was later demolished in 1887. The present structure a grand Gothic Revival building was constructed at its current location in Xishiku. It was a significant undertaking costing 450000 taels of silver. The money came from the Qing government. That’s a lot of money. A stunning example of Sino-Western architectural fusion.

The Boxer Rebellion in 1900 severely tested the church’s resilience. The church became a focal point of conflict. A chilling anecdote survives. A saying circulated among the Boxers “Don’t touch the foreigners’ bread. Don’t touch Xishiku Church.” The church endured siege and bombardment. It miraculously survived. The French and other international troops protected the church and its occupants. Hundreds perished in the fighting. The church however remained standing a beacon of hope amidst the chaos.

Following the Boxer Rebellion significant repairs were needed. A floor was added increasing its height and grandeur. The church then became the tallest single structure within the Beijing city walls. Its impressive size and architecture. The intricate carvings and stained-glass windows. The soaring spires reaching for the heavens. They create a powerful impression even today.

The 1900 Boxer Rebellion wasn’t the only threat. The Cultural Revolution also posed a risk to the church’s survival. It suffered damage and was used as a middle school during that period. The church was eventually returned to the Catholic Church in 1985. It was restored to its former glory. It now stands as a symbol of religious freedom. A testament to the enduring power of faith.

The Xishiku Church stands as a silent witness to centuries of Beijing’s history. Its survival is remarkable. A story of faith courage and resilience. A place of worship a landmark and a piece of living history. It has truly withstood the test of time. Take a moment to appreciate this magnificent structure before we continue our tour.
