Gazing upon Hasegawa Gyokuho’s Tombstone Road, one can almost feel the weight of history settle upon their shoulders. Hasegawa Gyokuho, a prominent painter of the late Edo and early Meiji periods, rests here. Born in Kyoto in 1822, Gyokuho, whose real name was Shigeki, also used the name Chokei. He studied under the renowned artist Matsumura Keibun of the Shijo school. Gyokuho excelled in flower-and-bird painting, showcasing his artistic talent. His skill was so admired, it’s said he was considered the best among Keibun’s students. Gyokuho’s life spanned a turbulent time in Kyoto’s history. He lived through the Kinmon incident of 1864, a violent clash between shogunate forces and Choshu domain troops. This conflict ignited a great fire that ravaged the city. Seeking refuge from the chaos, Gyokuho fled Kyoto. He spent nearly three years in Omi-Hachiman, present-day Hino Town, Shiga Prefecture. During this period, he created numerous works, including depictions of Mount Ibuki. Later, Gyokuho returned to Kyoto. He continued to create art until his death in 1879 at the age of 57.
