You’re standing right in front of the 長谷八幡宮, a place steeped in history and mystery. It’s a Shinto shrine, one of the oldest in Kyoto. It was built way back in the year 857, at the request of Emperor Seiwa himself. Can you believe it? The emperor decided to build a shrine in his honor, right here!

The shrine started as a small place of worship for the Hachiman deity, believed to be the guardian of the nation and its samurai. It was considered so important that it quickly became known as a national shrine and was visited by many members of the Imperial family.

It’s said that the shrine’s original structure was made of wood, but it was later rebuilt in large part thanks to the patronage of the powerful Tokugawa family. One of the most impressive things about the Long Valley Hachiman Shrine is its iconic red torii gate. It stands proudly as a symbol of the site, marking the entrance to the sacred area.

The shrine’s history is rich with anecdotes and legends, some of which whisper about the power of the Hachiman deity. And here’s something extra special, something you might not know – the shrine has a special, unique offering ceremony. It’s called “Yabusame,” an archery ceremony where riders on horseback shoot arrows at targets. It’s a real sight, a thrilling combination of tradition, skill, and awe. It’s said that the ceremony dates back to the Kamakura period and represents a spiritual connection between the riders, the arrows, and the deity.

If you have time after you’ve seen the shrine, it’s a must to explore the beautiful, nearby 长谷 neighborhood. It has a quiet charm all its own, and you can stroll through it, feeling as though you’ve been transported back to ancient Kyoto. You’ll find traditional homes, teahouses, and a real sense of history. And, of course, there are many other shrines and temples waiting to be discovered.
