Gaobeidian boasts a history stretching back centuries. Records show the name Gaobeidian first appeared in 1787. An older name, Jiaoting, also exists in records. The name translates to High Stele Shop. Perhaps a marketplace once stood here. It could be where merchants traded beneath towering stone markers.
Gaobeidian transformed over the years. In 1952, it became part of Dongjiao District. By 1954, it was established as Gaobeidian Township.
