鍬山神社, also known as Kuwayama Shrine, is more than just a beautiful spot. It is found in Kameoka City. The shrine is said to have been built in 709. It is dedicated to Okuninushi. Okuninushi is believed to have drained the surrounding area.

Legend says that Okuninushi used a metal hoe to cut through the land. This created fertile fields where once there was only water. The metal hoes piled up like a mountain. This gave the shrine its name. “Kuwa” means hoe. “Yama” means mountain.

The main hall has two sections. One is Kuwayama-gu. It honors Okuninushi. The other is Hachiman-gu. It honors Hachiman. Both shrine buildings are Kyoto Prefecture Registered Cultural Properties.

The grounds of 鍬山神社 are famous for autumn leaves. About 1,000 maple trees turn brilliant shades of red and gold. They create a stunning contrast with the shrine buildings. The heart-shaped pond reflects the vibrant colors.

The 鍬山神社 also holds the Kameoka Festival. During the festival, decorated floats parade through the streets. The shrine’s portable shrine is carried to Keiouji Shrine.

The shrine’s history is filled with both reverence and conflict. In 1576, Akechi Mitsuhide attacked Tanba. This led to the decline of the shrine’s rituals. Later, in 1681, the lord of Kameyama Castle revived the rituals. The shrine became a major center for the Kameoka area.

Notice the small pond between the two halls. Legend says that the two gods do not get along. The pond was built to keep them apart. The 鍬山神社 is surrounded by smaller shrines. These include Kinuyama Shrine and Yokobune Shrine.

The name “Yada” comes from the shrine. Long ago, there were eight rice fields. Minamoto no Yoritomo changed the name to “Yada”.

As you stand before the 鍬山神社 Stele, remember the story it tells. It is a story of hard work. It is a story of divine help. It is a story of how humans and gods shaped the land. This sacred place offers a glimpse into Japan’s past.
