Amidst the bustling city of Beijing, nestled within the grounds of Yuanmingyuan, lies a hidden gem, the Jian Garden. This isn’t just any garden. It’s a place steeped in history, echoing with whispers of emperors and the grandeur of a bygone era. The Jian Garden, also known as “Zhi Garden” during the Republic of China era, occupies a unique space. Located in the northeast corner of Yuanmingyuan, it borders the Changchun Garden and sits west of the Long River, enclosed by the eastern walls of the park.
The Jian Garden is modest in size, spanning about 6000 square meters, with buildings covering approximately 1900 square meters. But its historical significance far outweighs its physical dimensions. Originally constructed during the Qianlong Emperor’s reign, it was modeled after the Yi Garden of Yangzhou. This was not a place for grand public displays. The Jian Garden offered a more intimate retreat, a place of tranquility and leisure. One fascinating feature of the Jian Garden is the Boat Dock. It is the only one in Changchun Garden, specifically built to house the large painted boats used by the emperor and empress. The Jian Garden’s location also played a crucial role in the daily life of the Qing emperors. The south side of the garden connects to Ruyu Garden by a seven-hole bridge, offering easy passage between the two. The north side is marked by the grand East Gate of Changchun Garden, also called the Donglou Gate. This gate served as the primary exit and entrance for emperors journeying to Chengde, Dongling, and Panshan. So, as you stand before the Jian Garden, picture the emperors of old passing through these very gates, setting off on their travels.
Today, access to the Jian Garden is included within the Yuanmingyuan Ruins Park, offering a glimpse into this historical treasure. The best time to visit is between April and October when the gardens are in full bloom. Plan to spend about an hour exploring its tranquil pathways and imagining the stories it holds.
