Is it possible for a heart to break under the weight of thwarted love? Here at Yasui Konpiragu Shrine, that question hangs heavy in the air. Don’t let the unassuming facade fool you. Yasui Konpiragu is a place of profound spiritual resonance, a sanctuary where heartbroken souls have sought solace for centuries. The shrine’s origins date back to the reign of Emperor Tenchi in the 7th century. It was then that a powerful figure, Kamatari Fujiwara, founded this sacred ground. He prayed for his family’s prosperity and the longevity of his lineage. The grounds were adorned with beautiful purple wisteria, earning it the name “Fujidera”, the Temple of Wisteria. Centuries later, Emperor Sutoku, known for his deep affection for the wisteria, found himself drawn to this tranquil space. He renovated the temple and offered it as a residence to his beloved consort, Awa no Naishi. However, fate, it seems, had other plans. Emperor Sutoku, embroiled in political turmoil, faced defeat and exile. He was separated from his beloved Awa no Naishi, a heartache that echoed through the ages. He eventually died in exile, his last days spent at Konpira Shrine in Sanuki, renouncing worldly desires. Yasui Konpiragu then became a sanctuary for those seeking to sever themselves from negative attachments, from toxic relationships to unhealthy habits. The heartbroken come here to release their sorrows and pray for a brighter future.
