金刀比羅宮 Stele

“Lost in translation?” a friendly voice chuckled. I blinked, momentarily disoriented. Then I focused on the Kotohira-gū Stele, its kanji stark against the weathered stone. Known as Konpira-san, or simply Konpira Shrine, its history stretches back to the 1st century. This isn’t just any shrine. Kotohira-gū stands as a beacon of hope for seafarers, a testament to their enduring faith in Ōmononushi-no-mikoto, the deity of safe passage across the waves. Imagine hundreds of pilgrims, much like yourselves, ascending the 785 steps leading to the main shrine. 1368 steps to the inner shrine. A test of devotion. Along the path, stones etched with kanji bear witness to the generosity of donors, their hopes and prayers intertwined with the mountain’s sacred energy. Kotohira-gū, once a fusion of Buddhist and Shinto traditions, became solely Shinto after the Meiji era, reflecting the changing religious landscape of Japan. A sake museum stands along the way, offering earthly delights amidst the spiritual journey. And within the shrine’s walls, a treasure awaits. A hard candy, flavored with the tang of yuzu, known as kamiyo ame. Visitors break the candy with a small hammer, sharing not just the sweet treat but also the good fortune it represents with those unable to make the climb.
